The number of brokerage accounts is closing in on one million

As of December 1, 2022, the number of brokerage accounts in the Central Securities Depository’s (KCSD’s) nominee holding system approached one million − 899 thousand, with 525 thousand being holder subaccounts and 373 thousand – personal accounts recorded via omnibus accounts. Compared with the beginning of the year, the number of subaccounts has increased 2.4 times. Most of the subaccounts are opened in the name of an individual.

"We associate the growth of subaccounts observed in November with the IPO of a Kazakh oil giant like KazMunayGas. This caused quite a stir among the Kazakh retail investors. Their number has grown by 48,000 since November 1, " says Adil Mukhamejanov, Chairman of the Central Securities Depository’s Management Board.

The image of a Kazakh investor stays young. As of December 1, 2022, the group of retail investors aged 25 to 34 made up 30.4 % of the total number of retail investors, aged 18 to 24 – 18.9 %, and aged under 18 – only 0.1 %. The most numerous group is still the group of persons aged 35–54. Yet, from the beginning of the year it has decreased from 40% to 35.3 %. However, the share of investors over 55 years old has increased from 14.2% to 15.3% since November 1, 2022. As a reminder, previously this group has been systematically reducing throughout 2022.

In terms of gender, male retail investors account for 57.5% and female − 42.5%. At the same time, the number of women among the owners of brokerage accounts has increased almost 2.7-fold since the beginning of the year. In the past month alone, in absolute terms, their number increased by 24,090 people. Male investors are not far behind – plus 24,358 people since November 1, 2022.

Geographically, Almaty (21.4 %) and Astana (11.1 %) are still in the lead. Turkestan region (9.5 %) closes the top three. The least number of brokerage accounts were opened in the north of the country, specifically, in North Kazakhstan region (1.6 %).

The number of investors being served via omnibus accounts by KCSD participants has added more than 168,000 personal accounts over the past month. As a reminder, the changes in the Kazakh laws have made it possible for local KCSD participants to open omnibus accounts for aggregate recording of client assets from July 1, 2021.
