Number of Retail Investor Accounts Increased by 44% in Q1 of 2022

In the first quarter of 2022, the number of broker accounts opened by individuals amounted to 313,388 showing increase by 2.1 times in 12 months and by 44% since the beginning of 2022. The highest growth of the number of retail investor accounts was registered in February (plus 69 thousand accounts). In March, the retail investor database expanded by more than 22 thousand accounts.

An average retail investor keeps growing younger. Almost half (48.2%) of all individuals that are holders of broker accounts are Kazakh people under the age of 35. Since the beginning of this year, the number of retail investors aged 18–24 increased by nearly 2.5 times amounting to 59 thousand people. The share of sub-accounts opened in the name of minors is still not more than 0.1%. Although in absolute terms there is a slight increase.

"The rejuvenation of the investor base is due to the reduction of barriers to enter the market, primarily the simplification of brokerage account opening process through remote personal identification and the emergence of new digital brokerage applications, " explained Adil Mukhamejanov, Chairman of the Management Board of the Central Securities Depository.

Along with that, the major share of retail investors represents people aged between 35 and 54 (35.2%) followed by the group aged 25–34 (29.2%). The older generation is the fourth group. At this, the share of investors over 55 reduced from 21.2% in January to 16.6% in March 2022 due to the active growth of other groups.

There is relative stability in the gender ratio. The share of female holders of broker accounts amounts to 42%, the same as a month earlier. Although in absolute terms there is a slight increase − plus 8,701 people. Since the beginning of the year, the number of female investors at the securities market increased by 1.5 times.

As for the regions, the highest number of subaccounts is registered in the two cities of republican significance – Almaty (22.8%) and Nur-Sultan (9.4%). The third is Turkestan region – 9.1%. The region’s indicators at the end of March 2022 doubled compared to January 2022. Least of all brokerage accounts are opened in the north: Kostanay region (3%), Akmola region (2.2%) and North Kazakhstan region (1.4%).

In total, as of 1 April 2022, the recordkeeping system of the Central Securities Depository comprises about 315 thousand subaccounts, 90% whereof are opened by five Kazakhstan brokers.
